Tour 147: Following in the Footsteps of Alpine Pioneers: The Pass Adventure Between Thusis and Andermatt
The price includes 2 roadbooks (PDF):
From Thusis to Andermatt and from Andermatt to Thusis
Are you ready for an alpine adventure that perfectly combines demanding riding with monumental landscapes? This route connects the historic Urserntal with the heart of Graubünden over approximately 220 kilometers and a remarkable 4,214 meters of altitude, leading you straight through the heart of the Swiss Alps.
No matter which direction you tackle the tour from: you can expect a route of absolute superlatives. On one side is the historic market town of Thusis, which serves as the ultimate strategic hub at the northern foot of the San Bernardino and Splügen Passes, forming the spectacular gateway to the notorious Viamala Gorge. On the other side awaits Andermatt in the "Water Castle of Europe" – a magical center, surrounded by traces of old muleteers, historic tunnels, and the legendary Devil's Bridge in the wild Schöllenen Gorge. In between, you will cross the historic Lukmanier Pass, which connects the cantons of Graubünden and Ticino with its sweeping curves.
2 special tips for this tour:
The cobblestone cult on the Tremola: A true riding monument awaits you on the mighty Gotthard Pass. If the weather cooperates and the roads are dry, you should definitely not choose the modern main road here. Instead, use the Tremola – the historic, entirely cobblestone road with switchbacks on the south side of the pass. The cobblestones are in excellent condition, challenge your riding skills, and offer pure riding pleasure with a real nostalgic flair. Note: The route remains closed in bad weather.
Detour to Lago di Luzzone & Passo Muazz: If you are traveling in the Blenio Valley, you should definitely plan a detour at Olivone. The route leads you through narrow rock galleries and tight hairpin bends up to the gigantic, 165-meter-high Luzzone dam. For the adventurers among us, it goes even further: Behind the dam's tunnel awaits the Passo Muazz. The route there is roughly gravelled – a bit of enduro experience is an advantage here, but the solitary view of Lago di Carassina rewards every meter!
